Kostenlos.
Current version: 2.32
Set zram up and tune it — with sliders instead of a terminal. Even if your machine has no zram at all yet. Plus swappiness and swap files. It shows what is there, recommends what fits, and verifies every change itself. Free of charge.

Was ist zram überhaupt?
What is zram anyway?
Think of your RAM as a desk. Everything the computer is currently working on lies on it. When the desk fills up, something has to give way.
Swap is the filing cabinet on the disk: rarely used items move into it. The desk frees up — but fetching things back takes time, because the disk is far slower than memory.
zram is the vacuum bag: instead of moving things away, the system compresses them on the desk itself. Like winter clothes in a vacuum bag — much more fits, and nothing has to leave the desk. Typically data becomes 3–4× smaller: 4 GB ends up occupying about 1 GB.
Until now this could only be configured by typing commands and editing system files. Rikus Zram turns that into a window.
Die Zahlen verstehen
Understanding the numbers
Fünf Fragen, die fast jeder stellt — hier in Alltagssprache beantwortet.
Five questions almost everyone asks — answered in plain language.
“htop, free and fastfetch show more swap than I set up”
Both numbers are right — the tools simply group them differently.
To Linux, anything that can take data out of RAM counts as swap. That includes zram, and it includes the swap file on the disk. So htop, free and fastfetch report the sum of the two — a single figure.
Example: 15.4 GB of zram (inside RAM) + 2 GB swap file (on disk) = 17.4 GB. That is exactly what fastfetch then shows.
Rikus Zram shows the two numbers separately, because they mean very different things: zram sits in RAM and is fast, the file sits on the disk and is slow.
So the large figure is nothing to worry about. It only says: this much could be swapped out in total. Not: this much is already sitting somewhere.
„Wird jetzt alles auf die Platte geschrieben?“
Nein.
“Does everything get written to the disk now?”
No. Every swap area has a priority, and Linux always uses the highest one first. Rikus Zram gives zram priority 100 and the swap file priority 10.
So swapping goes into the compressed area inside RAM first — fast, without touching the disk at all. The file is only used once RAM and zram are full.
In everyday use the file therefore stays empty. It is a safety net, not a storage place: it makes sure a runaway program does not get killed straight away.
“The internet says swappiness should be 10 — why does the program recommend 150?”
Because the advice “10” comes from a time when swapping always meant writing to a slow hard disk. Holding back made sense then.
With zram it is the other way round. Swapping now means compressing inside RAM. That is fast and harmless. The sooner the machine moves rarely used things aside, the more room stays for what you are working on.
So here a high value is the right one. 150 has proven best in practice. The value on its own breaks nothing and can be moved back at any time.
“How big should the swap file be?”
For everyday use a small reserve is enough. With plenty of RAM, a few gigabytes will do — the file stays empty anyway and only steps in when things get tight. Making it bigger gains nothing; it just occupies disk space.
There is one exception: hibernation. For that the whole of RAM has to fit onto the disk, so the file must be at least as large as your RAM. The program works out the size you need and tells you from which size it becomes possible.
On btrfs there is one more thing: the file gets its own separate subvolume. Otherwise Timeshift could no longer take snapshots — silently. The program creates that area correctly by itself; you do not have to do anything.
“Hibernate or standby — what is the difference?”
Standby is what happens when you close the lid: the machine sleeps, RAM stays powered. Waking takes a second — but the battery keeps draining slowly, and once it is empty everything you had open is gone.
Hibernation writes the whole of RAM into the swap file and switches the machine completely off — no power at all. When you switch it back on, everything is open again as if you had never left. In exchange, shutting down and starting up take longer.
Two things are needed for this: a large enough swap file and an entry in the boot configuration that tells the system where to look on start-up. Rikus Zram sets up both with one checkbox — and “Undo” takes all of it back out again.
On Ubuntu and Linux Mint hibernation is also blocked by default. The program lifts that block as well — and restores it to the factory state when you undo.
Das kann es — auf einen Blick
What it can do — at a glance
Arbeitsspeicher besser nutzen — mit Schiebereglern statt Terminal.
Make better use of your memory — with sliders instead of a terminal.
First it shows you where you stand. Memory, zram and swap — with a verdict in one sentence: all fine, or something is missing.
A recommendation for this very machine. It is worked out from your memory size, the kind of disk, the filesystem and the hibernation setup — not from a rule of thumb off the internet.
Three sliders: how large zram should be, how eagerly the system swaps, and how large a swap file may be.
It sets zram up in the first place if your machine has none — including a start script on systems without systemd, where otherwise nothing at all would start.
Show what would change — beforehand, in plain words, with nothing actually happening.
Every file it touches is backed up first, and there is a button that undoes everything.
It measures afterwards whether the change really took effect, instead of just claiming it.
Consideration for btrfs: the swap file goes into its own area so Timeshift can still take snapshots.
Swap partitions are never modified.
Works with systemd and with SysVinit — so also on MX Linux and antiX.
Die eigene Paketquelle
Our own package source
Set it up once — every new version then arrives on its own.
Until now you had to come back to this page for every new version and fetch the
file by hand. From version 1.29 there is another way: Rikus Zram has its
own package source. It is the same technique your system uses to keep all other
programs current. You add it once — after that every new version simply shows up with
your normal system updates, with nothing left for you to do.
Step 1 — get the key. With it your computer can tell that the packages
really come from us and that nobody changed anything on the way. Freshly installed computers often lack the small program curl – the command installs it first:
Schritt 2 — die Quelle eintragen. Eine einzige Zeile, die deinem System
sagt, wo es nachschauen soll:
Step 2 — add the source. One single line telling your system where to
look:
echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/rikus.gpg] https://apt.rikus.info stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rikus.list
Schritt 3 — einspielen.
Step 3 — install.
sudo apt update && sudo apt install rikus-zram
On first start the program asks for your unlock code. You get it free of
charge using the button at the top of this page — name, e-mail, country, and the code arrives
by mail at once. You type it once and are never asked again.
If you already have the program: nothing needs reinstalling. Add the
source as shown above and the new version is offered to you as an ordinary update — including
by Rikus Updateall. The same source also carries Rikus Software and Rikus Updateall.
Du willst die Quelle wieder loswerden? Zwei Zeilen, und alles ist wie
vorher — das Programm selbst bleibt installiert:
Want to remove the source again? Two lines and everything is as before —
the program itself stays installed:
It stops with “unmet dependencies”? This happens on Debian 13 and LMDE 7 when the backports repository is switched on and packages from it are already in use, for example for Hyprland. Then two building blocks do not fit together. This works:
sudo apt install -t trixie-backports rikus-zram
